ABOUT THE HOST
Forest Innovation and Bioeconomy Conference 2023 is co-hosted by the Office of the Chief Forester in the Ministry of Forests of British Columbia, FPInnovations, Foresight Canada and UBC BioProducts Institute.
The Ministry of Forests is responsible for the stewardship of provincial Crown land and ensures the sustainable management of forest, wildlife, water and other land-based resources. The Ministry works with Indigenous and rural communities to strengthen and diversify their economies. The Office of the Chief Forester provides provincial leadership for forest stewardship through the continuous improvement of policies, legislation and practices for forest inventory, timber supply planning, allowable annual cut determination, silviculture, forest health, land-based research, climate change, forest bioeconomy and forest genetic resource management to achieve sustainable management of BC’s forests and maintain a balance between a healthy environment and economic sustainability.
The UBC BioProducts Institute (BPI) is an innovative ecosystem of high-impact fundamental and applied researchers working on solutions to today’s climate and environmental challenges. The Institute brings together inter- and multi-disciplinary researchers comprised of scientists, engineers, and market and policy experts to unlock the full potential of materials, chemicals and fuels produced in nature. Based on the guiding principles of circularity, sustainability and renewability, BPI seeks to reduce society’s footprint and tackle rampant environmental challenges such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and plastic waste.
FPInnovations is a private not-for-profit R&D organization that specializes in the creation of solutions that accelerate the growth of the Canadian forest sector and its affiliated industries to enhance their global competitiveness. Its expertise spans the pulp and paper industry, forest operations, wood products, and bio-sourced products sectors.
Foresight Canada is a non-profit organization based in British Columbia helping technology entrepreneurs and startups accelerate their growth by providing them with access to industry experts, funding opportunities, and market insights. Their goal is to foster innovation and create a sustainable future by supporting the development of clean technology, smart infrastructure, and digital solutions. They offer a range of services, including mentorship, workshops, market research, and funding programs, to help startups overcome challenges and scale up their businesses. Through their Net Zero Innovation Network in British Columbia (BCNZIN), they are working to catalyze the development and adoption of low-carbon technologies to enable BC and Canada to reach the 40% GHG reduction target by 2030. They do this through accelerating the development and adoption of net zero and other clean technologies through programming, projects, and broader ecosystem development.
